Meanwhile, back in Boston...

Boston.com is predicting 5 to 10 inches of snow. And so more than 600 schools and colleges have closed in response.

Looking more closely, I see that there have been some power outages from downed trees, and that the roads are supposed to be slick. And the snow sounds like it's coming pretty fast. So yes, that's a real issue.

But still, as a Midwesterner who's back in the region where he was born, I have to say...

Oh no! There's white stuff coming out of the sky in the winter--whatever can it be?! Lawsy, lawsy...Cancel school! Shut the roads! Load up on supplies and hide the children! The sky is falling! Snow in January--whatever shall we do?!

Yeesh.

It's not disastrous -- people are driving around and stuff -- but the plows weren't really succeeding at keeping the roads cleared during rush hour in the morning (hello, two inches an hour!), so there was a lot of sliding. For that reason, I think canceling school bus expeditions for the day might've been the better part of wisdom :)

Yeah, it's true--and I certainly think that erring on the side of safety rather than commerce and business as usual is best. And hey, a snow day is a treat.

At the same time, there does seem to be a major freak-out reaction in the Northeast to heavy snowfalls, and that's just a bit bizarre, since snow is not rare there! For instance, my Mom said that there were far more people than usual in the grocery store yesterday, stocking up on supplies. That strikes me as appropriate in advance of a hurricane or invasion, not a mid-level Nor'easter.

People always do that -- no idea why. I think people are a little freaked out about this storm because the last one stranded a lot of folks in hours of gridlock, but my sister (who drove to and from her office this morning) reported traffic was not nearly as bad as usual for rush hour.

Now imagine DC news outlets predicting 1-2 inches of snow: same results.

Pretty much every year at least *some* snow happens here, but still no one can seem to wrap their heads around the concept...

Doh! Sorry to hear it. The education of elite law students must go on, right?

Yeah, whatever. I called the snow line this morning and there was a recorded message saying "use your discretion" about whether to come in or not. It's not like I couldn't make it in, but y'know...half my coworkers aren't here.

Meanwhile, I missed the point of your post, which is that New Englanders are whiners. Yeah, I'm supporting that one. :)

Yeah, sorry it took so long! I wasn't paying attention to who had added me, and then I noticed that various folks had--including you!

How are things going? Besides in passing, haven't seen you for a while.
